Here are some railroad companies online (the number is dwindling yearly as mergers occur).

Yolo Shortline. Operates over old Sacramento Northern trackage west of Sacramento, California. Operates steam and diesel excursions during the weekend and freight movements during the week. Also operates the Steamboat Elizabeth Louise out of Old Sacramento.

Updated Link! Union Pacific Railroad. Now owns Southern Pacific (so SP's engines might get washed now, or just put out of their misery) which merged with Cotton Belt, Southern, and Denver and Rio Grande Western. Union Pacific has previously purchased the Chicago and Northwestern, and the Western Pacific which bought the Sacramento Northern which started as the Oakland, Antioch & Eastern, et cetera...

CSX. They offer railroad, container shipping, intermodal, trucking and barging services. Their railroad division is merging with Conrail (announced October 1996). Includes details of the CSX and Conrail strategic merger.
